Polo, Dior and some Gold

I remember growing up in the 90's and dreaming of the day that I could finally raid my mom's closet! I actually remember the first time I went looking through her closet, it was a school day in June 1999. It was my elementary school "graduation" and I picked out a long silver maxi skirt and matching sleeveless top, obviously! It was the late 90s, when matchy-matchy was totally cool hahaha. I totally have to find a photo of my twelve year old self :P

I haven't stopped raiding my mom's closet since I started back in 1999. Even after moving out, I always seem to slip away into her closet. It's even a family joke, when my mom can't find anything, she always says that I must've borrowed it hehehe.

Anyways, my mom has been in Honduras for the last month, so I've had the liberty of spending a lot of time in her closet. And the outfit I am currently wearing belongs to my mom, everything except the shoes. Unfortunately, I grew out of size 7 when I was 15. :( So we can't share shoes.
I love borrowing pieces from my mom's closet. I feel like I'm a little girl playing dress-up...hehehe.

Have you ever raided your mom's closet?

Christmas Memories [Honduras]

Christmas in Honduras has always been my favorite, there's just something about being in a tropical country with the extended family, reventando cuetes [blasting firecrackers]. Can't forget about the delicious comida tipica that is eaten on this special day!

Some of the typical foods that will be eaten on Christmas (and  New Year's Eve) are tamales. Mmmm, my mom makes the best ones, and I really need to learn how to make them because when she's not home for the holidays, we're left wishing! LOL.

So what are tamales? Tamales Hondure~os are made with a masa which is filled with pieces of pork or chicken, and veggies: carrots, garbanzos, rice, green peas, green olives and potato cubes. They are wrapped in banana leaves and are steamed. Some people eat them with lemon, hot sauce, or ketchup. In my family, we like to eat tamales with all three! My husband, who is from Mexico, eats the plain and thinks it's funny that we add ketchup to our tamales.

Ticucos are like tamales, except they are steamed in corn husks and only filled with beans. Ticucos are eaten with mantequilla. Also SO DELICIOUS.

Another awesome Christmas tradition in Honduras is blowing up firecrackers at midnight! We usually buy enough to last us a couple hours. And it's cool because the whole village is blowing up firecrackers. I know that some people like to fire shots in the air, but I don't want to advocate that since it is pretty dangerous.

Music is another important part to Christmas in Honduras, it is always playing! In our case, it would be blasting from the stereo, as we boogy down to some punta. Gotta work off all those calories ;) Hehehe.
The last Christmas (2008) I spent in Honduras was the last time I saw my grandpa Moncho alive.  Beautiful memories, that will live with me forever.

My parents are currently in Honduras, and I know they are having a blast!!! I can feel their positive energy, and am so happy they get to spend it with their siblings, parents, nieces and nephews!

FELIZ NAVIDAD!!!MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Sisters and Brothers and the skills they teach us

It's crazy how we've all grown up; I remember helping my parents feed you, cloth you and even change your diapers. I remember all of us cuddling on the couch watching cartoons, or playing barber shop in that stroller! Hahaha, what about all those dance (merengue and even punta!) performances we had to do for Mother's Day?

From playing house, Power Rangers, Lego and Barbies to asking for and giving advice about school, career and even relationships. You three are a part of my foundation, and partly responsible for who I was then, who I am now, and who I want to be tomorrow.  I will always be here for you, no matter the time, place or even distance.

Oh the adventures and accidents;  laughing and shouting; hugging and kicking that you go thru with your siblings throughout the years...pretty CRAZY right? Some of the most important life skills are taught by our sibling; how to share and be fair, how to cooperate and communicate, how to be kind and caring. One of the most important skills I've learned  from being a sister is how to forgive...

Take care of your siblings, tell them how much they mean to you and how much you love them. Leave them a note, send a letter/postcard, call them, text them....just tell them you love them.

"Blessed is the servant who loves his brother as much when he is sick and useless as when he is well and can be of service to him.  And blessed is he who loves his brother as well when he is afar off as when he is by his side, and who would say nothing behind his back he might not, in love, say before his face."  ~St Francis of Assisi
